World Health Day 2016: 5 Tried and Tested Tips to Stay Fit on Vacation

The vacation season is here and while you must be gearing up for your trip, it is important to pay a little attention to your health even when on vacation. No, we aren’t telling you to stick to your diet all the time and spend hours in the gym, but a few handy tips can go a long way in preventing that holiday weight you gain after each vacation. So this World Health Day, we share sure-fire ways that will help you stay fit on a vacation.

1. Download fitness apps on your smartphone
There are multiple apps that can help you stick to your workout routine even on a holiday. And if you are pressed for time, there are quick workouts that take up only 5-10 minutes of your time but promise to burn calories and give you a good cardio workout. Apps like 7-Minute Workout, Nike Training Club  don’t take up too much of your vacation time.

2. Make smart food choices
We tend to let go of our diet on holidays and while it isn’t too bad to cheat on your diet once in a while, doing so for a week on every meal can mean a lot of time on the treadmill post the break. To avoid this, make sure you order the smart way. For instance, order a plate of side salad with every meal, drink enough water in-between alcohol to keep yourself hydrated and keep a tab on your portion size. If it is a buffet spread, taste a bit of everything but don’t go for second helpings. Make sure you eat at least one healthy meal in a day to make up for all the excess calories. And if you are extremely calorie-conscious, you can keep a tab on the number of calories you consume by maintaining a food diary or using a calorie calculator app.

3. Make workouts fun!
Let’s admit it, we wouldn’t want to step into a gym on a vacation but exercise can be fun too. If you are on a beach vacation, go for an early morning jog, practise yoga by the sea or play a game of beach volleyball. If you are in the mountains, go for a trek and if you are in a city, explore it on foot instead of hopping into a cab. This will get you your daily dose of exercise without much effort.

4. Make your hotel room your gym
If you are on a business trip with hardly any time in hand to go out, worry not, you can use your hotel room to exercise. Do tricep dips using your bed, do body weight exercises like the plank and push-ups on the floor or rug and use the wall or chair for support for leg exercises. Or if you are in the mood to mix things up, put on some music and dance your heart out which will surely burn calories.

5. Encourage others to exercise with you
Clearly, it can be a difficult task to work out when others are having fun, making you the spoilt sport of the group. How to turn this around? Get them to join you. Keep 30 minutes aside for a group exercise session with your friends or family. It can be a competition between all of you to see who can do more laps in the pool, or a friendly game of badminton, tennis, cricket, etc. Or simply lead the way and do some quick floor exercises with your group in an open space.
